Top Tourist Attractions in Greece
Written by Anna James | Posted in General Updated 20-May

top tourist attractionsGreece is just so absolutely amazing of a place to be. It’s picturesque beyond words and regardless of how long you are there you will never get sick of the country. There is literally no end to the attractions and the monuments in Greece. Based on popularity, if one had to start at the top of the most sought after places to go, the following is a list.

The Jewel of Athens Greece: The Acropolis and the Parthenon- When one mentions Greece usually the first two things that come to mind are the Acropolis and the Parthenon. One can possibly not holiday in Greece and not see these two historical places. The breathtaking view from the Acropolis of Athens and the temples is something words don’t justify.

Money Saving Tip #6
Use Travelex.com to get the best rates on your currency (better than the Post Office!).

Surely one of the best ways to see these places is through a guided tour. They know all the good points and can answer any questions you may have, once you catch your breath.

National Archaeological museum- this museum is located in the heart of Athens and arguably has the most extensive collection there is. This place will dazzle you and its recommended you take the better part of half a day.

Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon- you will no doubt experience a Greek moment here against the ruined monument and along with an amazing view of the sea. This place is a favorite spot for locals just as much as travelers. There is public transportation that goes here yet most choose to drive or go by organized tour. Regardless of how you tour it, it is a must to see.

Walking Athens at Night- It is said that Athens Greece is one of the safest places to be at night, it is definitely one of the most beautiful. The streets come alive in the night time. The tourist shops are open late as well as all the taverns.

Piraeus- this is the port city of Athens. It is not a Greek island yet a few minutes there and it will feel like it. The seaside taverns here are absolutely amazing and a must see by the sea. The hustle and bustle of this port city makes it a very interesting place to go.

The Plaka & other neighborhoods in Athens Greece- the Plaka is the area of winding streets around the Acropolis. It’s very well known for its exquisite little shops and restaurants and trust me there is nothing little about the cuisine in these places. It’s a very engaging place to go, but be prepared it is very touristy.

Lycabettus Hill-  this is known as the other hill. History will say that Athena is said to have dropped Lycabettus while moving. Rumor said Athena liked the serendipitous placement of it as one hill looked after the other so she left it where it was, and is today.

Syntagma Square- this is also known as Constitution Square and is really the heart of Athens in many ways. Many a holiday event is held here in the square. The immense structure of the Parliament buildings are on one side. You will also find some of Athens most luxury hotels located here.

The Agora- the wandering here is captivating with the view of the almost perfect temple of Hephaestus.
