Things to do in Corfu
Written by Anna James | Posted in Blog Updated 20-May

corfuCorfu is a popular destination for Greece holidays. The island of Corfu received its name in an interesting tale of myth. It originated from a story of love and passion of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon. Poseidon fell in love with a beautiful maiden by the name of Kerkyra. Poseidon brought her to an unnamed island, and she was happy to receive his love. Poseidon was deeply obsessed with the maiden, he decided to name the island after her - Kerkyra island. Now, the island is known as Corfu.

Money Saving Tip #6
Use Travelex.com to get the best rates on your currency (better than the Post Office!).

Corfu island was once the battlegrounds of the Sicilians, the Persians, the Venetians, the Romans, the French, the Turks and the British. These giant forces collide to win the power over the island - and remnants of the wars are evident even until today. Still known as the Kerkyra island to the locals, the ruins from the war is apparent near the two castles of the Corfu city. The north of the island lies majestic mountains while the south of the island is where the sandy beaches are. A delight of Greece holidays.

The best time to visit the island of Corfu for your Greece holidays is during the Spring season, where it becomes a beautiful, colorful island with the blossoming of flowers, vegetations and fruits. Easter celebration on Corfu island is huge, filled with street fiestas and festivals. For those who love the sun, sand and the seas, obviously the best time is during summer - although it could get quite crowded. Autumn and Winter seems to be a very calm and peaceful time on this beautiful island.

Many people visit Corfu as it is believed that one can see nymphs (spirits of nature in the form of a beautiful maiden) bathing near the waterfall or in the caves once in a while. Myths aside, there are plenty of places to view in Corfu. The villages of Kynopiastes, Roda, Lakones and Achilleion are worth a visit while in Corfu.
