A Brief History of Greece
Written by Anna James | Posted in Brief History Updated 20-May

brief history greeceGreece can be traced back to the Stone Age hunters. You can tell when visiting Greece that it just oozes with history, you feel like there is a story waiting to come out. I am sure there are and it would take a long time I am sure to tell the whole history of Greece.  Let’s start by looking at the different time periods in Greece and how they came to form what Greece is today.

•Neolithic- this was the period from 6000-2900. According to historians the actual period of this was from 6800 to 3200 BC. The most domesticated settlements here were near the East of Greece. Most of the travelling was done due to overpopulation. The people of this time introduced pottery and animal husbandry in Greece.

•Early Bronze- dates back from 2900-2000. The Greek Bronze Age also known as the Early Helladic Era. Most of the information we find about this age is from the architecture, burial styles and the lifestyle. This is age is known as well because of the invention of metal bronze.

•Minoan- 2000- 1400 BC. This age was named after the legendary King Minos. This period is divided into three periods, the early Minoan, the Middle Minoan period and the late Minoan period.

•Mycenaean- 600- 1100 BC. This period was a time of high cultural achievement forming the backdrop and basis for subsequent myths of the heroes? It was named for the kingdom of Mycenae as well as the archaeological site where fabulous works in gold were unearthed. This age was cut short by widespread destruction and in came the Greek Dark Age.

•The  Dark Ages- 1100-750 BC. This is where the Dorians took over. There is question as to whether dissent or rebellion was the result of this period. Many say it was inevitable and a combination of both.

•Archaic- 750-500 BC. This age is defined through art at this time especially through pottery and sculpture. Much advancements in political theory were seen here especially the beginnings of democracy. The use of the written language was re-established here as well.

•Classical- 500- 336. Alexander the Great’s death in 323 B.C. had an impact on this time period. The building of the Parthenon on the Acropolis happened here as well. As well the finding of the philosophical schools of Socrates and Plato.

•Hellenistic 336-146 BC- this is the period between the conquest of the Persian Empire by Alexander the Great and the establishment of Roman supremacy.

There were only a few historians in the time of ancient Greece. The three of them were able to record their time of Ancient Greek history that includes Herodotus who was known as the Father of History, Thucydides and Xenophon. Herodotus lived in the 5th century and was well known for his writings of the histories. Most of the information we have on this historian is the stuff he documented himself on himself. It is said he died during the plague of Athens which actually took thousands of Athenians. He was noted as a seasoned traveler and you can tell this in his work. It is said he was the first person of his time to travel the world and report on it. This is the reason he is credited with the Father of History.
