When is the Best Time to Visit Greece?
Written by Anna James | Posted in General Updated 20-May

best time to visitWhen is the best time to visit Greece, the question should be is there a bad time to visit Greece. With its picturesque beauty and historic landmarks a Greece holiday is always a good bet. Year round there is always something to do in Greece. Depending on what you wanted to do in Greece there are some times of the year that would be more favorable than others. If you wanted to swim in the turquoise sea, December might not be the best time. By taking a look at what Greece has to offer year round will help someone make that decision.

Money Saving Tip #6
Use Travelex.com to get the best rates on your currency (better than the Post Office!).

The months of July and August tend to be the most popular months to travel to Greece. The weather is very hot and the tourist season is thriving. This is also the time of year many locals take their vacations as well. Many of the resorts and attractions are very busy so pre planning and booking to avoid waits are advisable. During this time is August 15th which is the biggest holiday in the summer months. It is the third most important religious holiday in Greece after Easter and Christmas. The entire country shuts down and everyone takes advantage of the long weekend. Candles are lit all over for  Panagia (Virgin Mary) who’s ascent to the heavens is commemorated on this day and referred to as Assumption Day.

The months of May and June just before the summer and September and October just after the summer are great times to holiday in Greece as well. The weather is perfect, it still hot, yet not unbearably so. The businesses are all open and not as busy so they have more time for the tourists. The children are still in school so it’s quieter. Regardless of where you go it’s less crowded and more accessible. Since it is off peak time as well you may find some better prices for lodging and attractions.

Many people choose to holiday in Greece in the months of November to March. For those that don’t want the extreme heat this is a great time of year. It tends to be cooler and can be rainy at times. Despite the weather it’s just as breathtaking as ever. The historic sites and landmarks are still there. Being off season there are no crowds no matter where you attend. The thing to keep in mind here a fair amount of the shops and businesses will shut down during this time, especially on the islands and the holiday towns.

Beauty in Greece

By doing some pre checking you will be aware of the areas that do this. If travelling this time of year the best destinations are the places like Athens, the bigger islands. By choosing the ones that have permanent residents, like Crete, there will be more to do. Skiing as well is a great thing to do in Greece so by choosing a place that has this winter activity you will be more likely to have things to do as well.

Money Saving Tip #2
Book your hotel through Booking.com and get the lowest rate for your hotel..guaranteed!

It’s a place of history, culture and amazing beauty.
